Day 10- Hard Work, Laughter, and a City Visit
Hello everyone, hope you’re having a good day. Today was our second day at our various worksites. Kai’s group went back to Daniel’s farm while Sara’s group went to the women’s coop.
It’s Sara. Today, my group visited another site within the women’s co-op, Sergio’s beautiful farm where he taught us how to plant corn. In order to do so, we cleaned up the land, created holes, distributed organic soil, and finally planted the corn plants. During this process, we were able to get to know Sergio better. He told us that he was passionate about woodworking and sold cutting boards, spoons, and other goods. After a lot of hard work, we finished planting over 100 corn plants and it felt amazing to help Sergio and admire the rows of corn. Sergio then took us on a tour of his farm where we were able to meet his cows, tried fresh coconut water, and saw his woodworking station. Finally, we had some fresh guanábana juice and bought gorgeous handcrafted goods.
Meanwhile, the same group of students from yesterday were working on the school project. They continued painting the classroom, finishing a second coat on all the walls. Tomorrow they are hoping to put the last and final coat of paint on the classroom walls. After a delicious lunch in the cafeteria and many laughs and games with the students during recess, they all headed back to the Eco Lodge.
It’s Kai! At the other community project at Daniel’s farm, we arrived and were greeted with smiles by Daniel and his wife. Soon after putting on our work gloves, we went to his composting area, doing second coats over the parts that we painted yesterday. After we finished the second coat (with reggae music of course) we walked up the hill to his cow pen. To prevent water and termite damage, we coated the wooden structure with a sealant wax. By 12:30, we were exhausted and greeted with a delicious lunch! We left the farm ready for our next adventure, Sarapiqui in Puerto Viejo with the rest of our ámenlo crew.
After we all worked hard at our various community projects, we got to visit Puerto Viejo in Sarapiqui, a traditional Costa Rican town. There are clothing stores, souvenir shops, delicious ice cream, and more. We were able to walk around the town and practice our spanish with the locals while buying goods. The ice cream was refreshing in the heat! It was an amazing way to end the day. Now we’re heading back to our homestays for another delicious dinner!
Pura Vida!
Sara and Kai
