Day 4- Expanding our Community

Hola Amigos!

It's Dani and Marina here for our blog!

I (Marina) got to go to the organic farm while Dani went to the local Linda Vista school. Dani and I went to separate groups today to see the community projects that we will be helping with.

On the way to the farm Randall taught us about monocrops and their negative impact on the environment; this process drains nutrients from the land and ultimately makes the soil unusable. When we arrived at the farm, we met Daniel, the owner. We were excited to feed his pigs, learn about how he creates organic fertilizer, take a tour of his farm where he grows pepper corn, vanilla, corn, beans and much more. Daniel and Randall spent time to point out previous work that Menlo has done to the farm, which was cool to see! After the tour we had a delicious lunch cooked by his wife and daughter. Not only was it delicious, but many of us were able to try new foods! After lunch, Daniel told us his inspiring story about why he started his organic farm and how his farm is reversing the negative impacts that the corporate food companies have brought to Costa Rica.

(Dani) We had such a GREAT time at the school with the kids! They welcomed us with such big smiles and excited faces, which reminded some of us of our families back home! After introductions, we got a quick tour of the school and the kids had many activities ready for us. During our free time at the school, we had the chance to make pretty strong bonds with the students. Most of the time, they wanted to play hide-and-seek, tag, or bol with us. It was for sure tiring but seeing them have a good time with us, made us feel joyful and most importantly at home. Our time with them felt short and we look forward to working with them again!

After coming back from the work sites, we went to the river to swim in chilly, but refreshing water. During that time, we bonded through playing games and chatting, which eventually led to an organic compliment web! We all felt closer together afterwards.

We are excited and looking forward to meeting our homestays tomorrow!

Pura Vida!
